Gluten-Free Living
Creating
a Gluten-Free Home.
One of the challenges that we have experienced when a family member
has celiac disease, is how we keep the kitchen free of gluten
without penalizing the other family members.
First we tried having two toasters, separate food containers,
and separate baking pans. We installed a double-sink to wash dishes
separately. After about two months we realized that all it would
take is “double dipping” a knife and getting crumbs
in the butter or mayonnaise, or some crumbs falling into tomato
sauce and that would cause contamination.
We had to have a gluten-free kitchen. But how? Especially since
many gluten-free products don't appeal to non-celiacs.
Well, one solution to the problem are the products we created,
which we believe are a major step closer in taste and texture
to foods containing gluten. Now everyone can enjoy gluten-free
foods. Eating gluten-free can be healthy and delicious!
In addition, we recommend bringing a list of gluten-free products
with you when you shop. There are many national name-brand consumer
products that have been verified as gluten-free are safe for
everyone.
Here is a list that
we have found valuable from the Celiac
Disease Online Support Group. Another list has
been compiled by the Wheaton (Illinois) Gluten-Free Support
Group. It
is a PDF file, which needs Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be
downloaded from here.
